Separation of Employment
What happens when employment ends — and how to get it right.
Employees leave for many reasons. Whether the separation is voluntary or involuntary, how it’s handled matters.
This session walks through the do’s and don’ts of employment separations—before, during, and after the conversation—so exits are managed consistently, respectfully, and with reduced risk. Participants will gain a practical, high-level overview of the full separation landscape, helping supervisors, managers, and HR professionals understand what’s required, what’s recommended, and what to avoid when employment ends.
During this 1-Hour program, you will:
• Identify the different types of employment separations, including voluntary, involuntary, retirement, and job abandonment
• Understand key legal considerations related to final pay, notice requirements, at-will employment, and documentation
• Review best practices for employee relations, including termination checklists and respectful communication
• Learn how to manage company property, system access, passwords, and confidential information at separation
• Explore do’s and don’ts related to references, recommendation requests, and reference checks
